80's Disco Dinos

80's Disco Dinos

The wedding that inspired the creation of Mod Lob Studio... TML founder Sophie married James at The Shack Revolution in September 2023, in a haze of streamers, classic film inspired graphics and an 80's video game colour palette.

As a full time illustrator and brand designer, creating the stationery and decor for our own wedding was a no-brainer. We chose to go OTT (on this and pretty much the entire wedding weekend!), stuffing as many personal references and hidden meanings in as possible, to create something that was completely unique to us as a couple.

As huge fans of 80's and early 90's music and films, (and after booking Miami Vibe for the evening - the best 80's band EVER) we ran with that theme. Starting with a classic 80's video game themed colour palette of black, neon orange, hot pink, lilac and turquoise, for the invite suite I hand drew a velociraptor bride and groom, dilophosaurus with heart shape crest, stegosauruses (stegosauri??) with heart shaped plates and THE Jurassic Park t-rex, complete with a 'save the date' banner replacing the 'when dinosaurs ruled the earth' version from the film's iconic climax. Because when you think 'wedding' you think 'dinosaurs', right?

For the venue decor, I created A1 posters that combined film references with a nod to our day - including a Back to the Future poster with our red camper van (and my wedding car!) replacing the DeLorean, a Star Wars poster with death star disco ball, a Jurassic Park poster with our heart shaped dilophosaurus and an Indiana Jones poster with a disco ball replacing the giant boulder.

As a nod to James's mum's love of scratch cards, we created our own with hidden free drink tokens. We designed drink toppers to decorate our his and hers cocktails and created bespoke beer mats for the tables... if something could be personalised then you bet I was going to put a dinosaur on it. The end result? A bit mad to be fair, but completely and utterly 'us'. It was colourful, fun, and totally OTT but made people laugh... which was perfect for our laid back, untraditional wedding.
